Custom Printing - Creative Design and Print

Custom Printing

Custom printing for Auckland businesses that need something the standard catalogue doesn't cover - unusual sizes, specialty stocks, layered finishes, and builds that require actual problem-solving.

Sometimes you've got a print project and nothing in the standard catalogue works. Wrong size. Wrong material. Wrong everything. That's where custom printing comes in, and it's a big part of what we do at our Henderson print studio. We're the custom printing Auckland businesses call when the brief doesn't fit a template and the project needs someone willing to figure it out.

What is Custom Printing?

Here's the thing about custom printing: there's no "add to cart" button. You might need a 430mm x 280mm folder with a gusset pocket and foil on the cover. Or maybe you're printing on a synthetic stock that jams half the machines in town. We work through these problems one at a time, and honestly, that puzzle-solving is the part we enjoy most. If your project fits a standard format, our broader print shop catalogue will sort you out. But if it doesn't, that's our lane.

What do we actually handle? A lot more than people expect:

  • Odd sizes and non-standard formats (if it fits on a sheet, we can probably make it work)
  • Textured, metallic, and synthetic stocks that most shops won't touch
  • Layered finishing like die-cut plus emboss plus foil (yes, all on the same piece)
  • Variable data runs where every single printed piece carries different information
  • Custom packaging (boxes, sleeves, folders with structural engineering baked in)
  • Prototyping so you can hold it in your hands before committing to a full run

We've been solving weird print problems for years. It's genuinely what we're good at.

We've had clients come to us after two or three other print shops said no. Not because those shops are bad. They just aren't set up for the unusual stuff. We are. And once we've nailed your custom printing project, it often leads to branded promotional merchandise or screen printed apparel so everything ties together under one roof.

When You Need Us

When You Need Custom Printing

1

Unusual Size Requirements

Your content doesn't fit A4, A5, or DL. Maybe it's a 300mm square booklet or a narrow strip card for retail shelving. We'll work out how to produce it without compromise.

2

Specialty Materials

Textured linen stock. Yupo synthetic. Metallic pearlescent. Each one prints differently and most shops won't bother learning the quirks. We've run enough of them to know what works, and what buckles in a laminator.

3

Complex Finishing Combinations

Die-cut plus emboss plus foil on the same piece? That's three separate passes and the sequence matters. Get it wrong and you're reprinting the whole job.

4

Variable Data Printing

Every piece comes out different. Personalised names on 2,000 direct mail cards, sequential serial numbers on certificates, region-specific versions of a sales brochure, all in one run.

5

Packaging and Structural Printing

Boxes, presentation folders, custom sleeves. These aren't flat prints. They need structural dielines, score lines, and glueing tabs that actually fold together properly.

6

Prototyping and Samples

Want to hold it before you commit? Good. We'll build a physical sample so you can test the feel, check the fold, and catch problems while they're still cheap to fix.

7

Matching Existing Materials

Lost the original files? Previous printer gone? We reverse-engineer from your physical sample, matching paper weight, Pantone colours, and finishing by eye and by measurement.

8

Unusual Binding or Assembly

Some projects need wire-o through a cover board, or a concertina fold with a belly band, or something we haven't seen before. That's fine. We'll figure out the construction.

9

Heritage and Archival Printing

Acid-free stocks, archival inks, traditional typesetting techniques. When the printed piece needs to last decades (or look like it came from one), the material choices matter enormously.

10

Technical and Industrial Applications

Waterproof labels for outdoor use. Compliance stickers that meet specific AS/NZS standards. Print that has to survive UV, chemicals, or heavy handling.

Our Process

Our Custom Printing Process

01

Project Consultation

Tell us what you're trying to make. Seriously, just describe it, even if you don't know the technical terms. Half the time, the best approach is different from what people initially picture, and a 15-minute conversation saves a lot of back-and-forth later.

02

Technical Assessment

We work out what's doable in-house versus what needs a specialist supplier. Some jobs need both. And we'll be upfront if there's a constraint, because certain materials won't take certain finishes, for example.

03

Options Development

Most custom projects have more than one viable path. We'll lay out the options with honest trade-offs so you can pick the direction that fits your priorities.

04

Sampling and Prototyping

You get a physical sample before the full run. Hold it. Fold it. Show it to your team. If something's off, we adjust now, not after 500 units are printed.

05

Production Planning

Custom work has more moving parts than standard jobs. Materials need ordering, processes need sequencing, and everything has to line up. We map it out so nothing gets missed.

06

Quality Management

Non-standard specs mean we can't just set it and forget it. We check output throughout the run, especially on the first dozen sheets, because catching a drift early beats discovering it in the delivery box.

Why Choose Us

Why Choose Creative Design and Print for Custom Printing?

Prototype Before Production

You'll hold a physical sample before we run the full job. Test the fold. Check the colour against your brand swatch. If it's not right, we tweak it, because finding problems on a prototype is infinitely better than finding them on 1,000 finished pieces.

Specialty Material Sourcing

Metallic pearl stock looks incredible but it's fussy under ink. Synthetic Yupo is waterproof but won't take standard toner. We've tested enough unusual materials to know which ones actually perform, and we'll source samples for you to approve before committing.

Die-Cut and Structural Engineering

Custom shapes need tooling. We draw the die lines, factor in paper grain direction, and build structural templates that fold cleanly and assemble without fighting. Sounds straightforward, but getting tolerances wrong by half a millimetre ruins the whole piece.

Multi-Process Coordination

Print it, laminate it, die-cut it, foil stamp the logo, hand-assemble the final piece. Five processes, and the order matters. We plan the sequence so each step works with what came before, not against it.

Variable Data Integration

2,000 direct mail pieces, each with a different name and offer code? Done in one run. We merge your data with the design file so every piece is unique but the layout stays locked and the print quality stays consistent throughout.

Reverse-Engineering Capability

No original files? No problem. Bring us the physical piece and we'll measure the stock weight, match the Pantone colours, identify the finishing, and rebuild the artwork from scratch. We've done this more times than you'd think.

Consultation First

Ring us or email with your brief. We'll talk through what you need, ask the right questions, and then put together a quote based on the actual specifications, not a generic template.

Our quotes show you what's going where: materials, print process, each finishing step, and any specialist supplier involvement. No mystery line items.

Prototype Pricing

Samples get quoted separately from the production run. Think of it as insurance: you're paying a little upfront to make sure the final run is exactly what you want.

Frequently Asked Questions - Custom Printing

Depends on the production method. Our digital presses handle anything within the SRA3 sheet size. Offset opens up larger formats. And finishing (die-cutting, folding, binding) each has its own size limits. Tell us what you need and we'll figure out the best way to produce it.
Die-cutting, embossing, debossing, foil stamping in gold/silver/copper/custom colours, spot UV, full UV coating, soft-touch lamination, textured lamination, edge painting, laser cutting, plus a range of binding options. Not every finish works with every stock or process, though, so we'll confirm what's compatible with your specific job.
We do, regularly. Synthetic Yupo, textured linen stocks, metallic pearlescents, translucent vellum. We've run all of them. The key is matching the material to the right press and ink system. Describe what the finished piece needs to do (waterproof? tearproof? just look amazing?) and we'll recommend the right stock.
Bring us your concept, even a rough sketch on paper, and our design team will develop it into print-ready artwork. We also work directly with your designer or agency if you've got one, giving them the technical specs they need for specialty printing and finishing.
Just ask. Call or email with your idea and we'll tell you straight: yes we can do it, yes but with these constraints, or honestly no, and here's an alternative that gets close. No charge for that initial conversation.
Start with a conversation, not a shopping cart. Ring us on 0274 054 057 or email your brief, we'll discuss specs, produce a sample if needed, confirm everything's right, and then run the job. Custom work needs that back-and-forth to get it right.
